Nevers sits on the right bank of the Loire where the small Nièvre river joins it. From above, the Loire is the main feature. It is a wide, slow river with sandbanks and islands, crossed by a long bridge. The old town rises on a hill above the water, with streets winding toward the cathedral and the ducal palace at the top.
The city is known for its tradition of faience, a tin-glazed pottery made here since the sixteenth century. Nevers is also where Bernadette Soubirous, of Lourdes, spent her later years at the convent of Saint-Gildard, where she is still venerated. The Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours, a motor racing track, lies a short distance to the south.
