Niğde lies on the high plateau of central Anatolia, south of the Cappadocian valleys and in sight of the Aladağlar and Melendiz mountains. From above, the old core gathers around a rise in the middle of town, and newer districts spread outward in more regular blocks. Past the urban edge the roads cross irrigated farmland known for its apples and potatoes.
The castle hill is the historic heart of the city. The fortress and the Alaeddin Mosque, a Seljuk building from the thirteenth century, stand on or beside it. The streets beneath follow the slope in short, irregular turns, which gives the centre a looser texture than the planned neighbourhoods further out.
