Nioko I sits on the north-eastern edge of Ouagadougou, where the capital of Burkina Faso gives way to newer residential quarters. On a map it reads as a patchwork of rectangular plots and straight, mostly unpaved lanes laid out on almost perfectly flat ground. There are no hills or coastline to bend the pattern, so the street plan itself carries the whole image.
The neighbourhood grew quickly as the city expanded outward, and the plan shows it. Tidy parcel grids stand beside looser clusters where houses went up first and surveying came later.
