Norwich lies in eastern Connecticut, at the point where the Yantic and Shetucket rivers join to form the Thames, which flows south to Long Island Sound. From above, the city's layout follows this meeting of waters. Downtown sits at the head of the harbour, and streets climb steeply up the surrounding hills.
Norwich was founded in the seventeenth century, and its older area, Norwichtown, centres on a historic green. In the nineteenth century the city grew wealthy from mills and trade, and grand houses were built on its slopes. It became known as the Rose of New England, and it is the birthplace of Benedict Arnold.
