Odense lies in the middle of Funen, with the small, winding Odense River (Odense Å) passing through the centre. Around the old town, the city spreads in rings. Medieval streets give way to nineteenth-century blocks, then to garden suburbs and large ring roads. A canal leads north to Odense Fjord, connecting the city to the sea.
The city is the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. His childhood neighbourhood of small, low houses and cobbled lanes still stands on the east side of the centre. St Canute's Cathedral dominates the old town. In recent years the city has rebuilt a major road through the centre as a new urban district and added a light rail line.

The small streets around Hans Christian Andersen's childhood home form a tight, irregular cluster east of the cathedral. It is a fine-grained patch of the old town.

Ring roads encircle the city at several distances. The canal runs north to the fjord, giving the map concentric order and a clear link to the sea.
