Oued Sly lies west of Chlef, in the wide valley of the Chelif, Algeria's longest river. The town takes its name from the Oued Sly, a tributary that crosses the plain. The land is low and open, and much of it is farmed, so the town's shape is defined by roads and field edges rather than by terrain.
From above, the centre has a fairly regular grid of streets. Newer housing districts extend it outward in straight blocks. The main road and the railway that run along the Chelif valley pass nearby, and they appear as strong lines connecting the town to Chlef and to the west.
