Ouessé is in the Collines department of central Benin, a region of rolling savanna, farmland and scattered rocky hills between the coast and the country's north. The town is the seat of a commune of the same name. On a map it appears as a modest settlement stretched along its roads, with houses and compounds thinning out gradually into the countryside.
The layout reflects how life works here. Trade and movement follow the main routes, and smaller tracks branch off toward fields and outlying villages. Unlike a planned city, Ouessé grew in an irregular pattern, and it looks organic from above. Blocks vary in size, and the paths follow the land rather than a ruler.
