Owings Mills lies northwest of Baltimore in Baltimore County, where the city's suburbs meet the rolling Piedmont. From above, the area combines suburban layouts with larger infrastructure. Curving subdivision streets and cul-de-sacs fill the land between main roads, and wooded stream valleys cut through the neighbourhoods. Interstate 795 runs north from the Baltimore Beltway through the area, forming a strong line across the map.
The name comes from mills built on local streams in the eighteenth century by the Owings family. The area has since become one of Baltimore's major growth corridors. The Baltimore Metro SubwayLink ends here, and the Baltimore Ravens have their training facility in Owings Mills. Housing, office parks and shopping centres now spread across what used to be farmland.
