Oyabe lies in the west of Toyama Prefecture, on the plain shaped by the Oyabe River as it flows north toward Toyama Bay. On a map the city centre forms a modest grid close to the river, while the rest of the municipality spreads across rice fields and farming hamlets. To the west the ground rises into forested hills along the border with Ishikawa.
Those hills hold the Kurikara Pass, site of a famous battle in 1183 during the Genpei War, when Minamoto no Yoshinaka is said to have routed a much larger Taira army. The old road over the pass still threads through the woods, and on a wider map it appears as a thin, winding line leading away from the plain.

Around the town, rice fields and scattered hamlets cover the flat land in a fine mosaic of rectangles, typical of the plains of western Toyama.

To the west, wooded hills rise toward the historic Kurikara Pass, where winding roads and forest tracks give the map a softer, organic edge.
