Pesaro lies on the Adriatic coast of the Marche, where the Foglia River reaches the sea. From above, the old town keeps traces of its Roman grid behind the waterfront. A straight seafront promenade runs along the beach, the river and harbour mark the eastern side, and the wooded headland of Monte San Bartolo rises to the north, turning the coastline into cliffs.
The city is the birthplace of Gioachino Rossini, and the Rossini Opera Festival is held here every summer. Pesaro is a UNESCO City of Music, and it was Italian Capital of Culture in 2024. On the seafront, Arnaldo Pomodoro's large bronze sphere has become one of the city's best-known images.

The river enters the sea on the eastern side of the centre. Its mouth and the harbour add structure and a clear break in the coastline.

North of the city, the headland park rises steeply above the sea. On the map it is a large, quiet area where the streets stop.
