Pingzhuang lies in the Chifeng area of southeastern Inner Mongolia, in hilly country near the border with Liaoning. The town is known as a coal-mining centre, and its layout reflects that history: residential districts, industrial sites and rail lines strung along the valley floor rather than a single round centre.
On the map, the hills around the town show up as blank space, which makes the built-up area look like a long ribbon following the lower ground. Main roads run lengthways through the valley, with shorter streets branching off to housing blocks and works.
