Puri lies on the coast of Odisha, where the land meets the Bay of Bengal along a long, almost perfectly straight beach. On a map the shoreline is the first thing you notice: one clean edge running the full width of the town. Behind it, streets pack tightly together, with lanes, lodges and markets crowded between the sea and the flat land further inland.
The heart of Puri is the Jagannath Temple, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Hinduism and one of the four Char Dham. From the temple the Grand Road, known locally as Bada Danda, runs as an unusually wide avenue towards the Gundicha Temple. Every year the Rath Yatra pulls huge wooden chariots along it, watched by enormous crowds.
That avenue gives the town a clear central axis, and it looks striking in plain linework.
