Rāmsar sits on the Caspian coast in Māzandarān province, where the Alborz mountains come unusually close to the sea. That geography shapes the whole map. The town is a long, narrow strip between shoreline and slope, with the coast road running east to west through it, and short streets climbing a little way inland before the forest takes over.
The town is known worldwide for the Ramsar Convention, the international treaty on wetlands signed here in 1971. It is also known for hot springs whose natural radioactivity is among the highest recorded anywhere, and for its early twentieth-century palace and grand hotel, built when Rāmsar became a fashionable resort.

The main road runs parallel to the shore and carries most of the town's activity, so the settlement reads as a long, narrow ribbon.

To the south the streets stop where the forested Alborz foothills rise. The abrupt edge gives the town its distinctive narrow shape.
