Mapa
Rathenow Map Poster & Print
Rathenow lies on the Havel in western Brandenburg, in the flat, watery landscape of the Havelland. On the map the river is the dominant feature. It splits into arms and channels around the town, forming islands and requiring a series of bridges, and the old centre sits on a raised area between them.
The town is known as a centre of the German optical industry. In the early nineteenth century Johann Heinrich August Duncker began mass-producing spectacle lenses here, and Rathenow still calls itself a city of optics. His statue stands in the town, and optical manufacturing remains part of its identity.
A Rathenow map poster shows how thoroughly the water shapes the town. The river arms cut through the street pattern, the bridges appear as small connecting strokes and the flat surrounding land spreads out beyond the edges. It is a quiet, balanced composition typical of Brandenburg's river towns.

Bridges and locks

Old town centre
The historic core stands slightly apart between the water channels and forms a compact cluster of streets surrounded by the river.
