Reutlingen lies at the foot of the Swabian Jura in Baden-Württemberg, and its location on a map is easy to read. The medieval core forms a compact oval, still traced by the line of its old walls. Outside it, newer districts stretch along the valley of the Echaz, the small river that runs through the city.
East of the centre, the Achalm rises as a solitary cone-shaped hill, marked on the map by tight contour lines. Further south the land climbs toward the escarpment of the Jura. The streets are denser in the valley floor and loosen as they reach the wooded slopes.
A Reutlingen map poster centres on a city that was a free imperial city for centuries. Its Gothic Marienkirche still anchors the old town. Among its lanes is Spreuerhofstraße, often listed as one of the narrowest streets in the world. At map scale it almost disappears, which is part of its appeal.
