Roatán is the largest of the Bay Islands of Honduras, lying off the country's northern coast in the Caribbean. It is long and thin, stretching roughly east to west, with a hilly spine running down its length. Along its coast, small bays and coves cut into the shoreline, and a fringing reef sits just offshore. The reef is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef system.
The island's settlements are spread along both coasts. West End and West Bay, at the western tip, are known for beaches and diving. Coxen Hole, on the south shore, is home to the main harbour and the airport, while French Harbour lies further east. A main road runs along the island's spine and connects these places.
