Rosetta Map Poster
Rosetta, known in Arabic as Rashid, stands on the western bank of the Rosetta branch of the Nile, a few kilometres upstream from where the river enters the Mediterranean. On the map, the city is a long settlement pressed against the water, its streets running back from the riverbank into a dense old core, with palm groves and fields spreading across the delta beyond.
The old town keeps a tight, irregular street pattern, and many Ottoman-era brick houses survive along its lanes, making Rosetta one of the best places in Egypt to see domestic architecture of that period. Toward the north, the river widens and bends toward the coast, and the Mediterranean shoreline gives the edge of the map a long, gentle curve.
In 1799, French soldiers found the Rosetta Stone near the town, a decree carved in three scripts that became the key to deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs.
