Ruteng sits high in the western mountains of Flores, the administrative centre of the Manggarai Regency. From above, the town spreads across a gently tilted basin rather than along a coast, which is unusual for an island town in East Nusa Tenggara. Its streets bend around the slopes instead of following a strict grid, and green hills press in close on every side.
A Ruteng map poster shows a compact centre with roads running out into the surrounding farmland.
