Sabang is the main town of Weh Island, a small island off the northern tip of Sumatra in Aceh Province. It is often described as the northernmost point of Indonesia, and a Kilometre Zero monument on the island marks the start of the country's territory. The town lies around a sheltered bay with deep water close to shore, which historically made it an important port.
On a map, the coastline dominates. The town's streets follow the curve of the bay, climb onto hillsides and stop where forest takes over. Across the island, winding roads link beaches, coves and small villages. The surrounding waters are known for coral reefs and diving, drawing visitors to the island's rocky shores.
