Saint Croix lies south of the other US Virgin Islands, on its own in the Caribbean Sea. From above it is long and narrow, running east to west. Rugged hills and forest cover the northwest, gentler plains cross the centre and south, and a thin, dry eastern tail tapers to a point. Roads spread across the central plain, linking settlements that still carry the names of old sugar estates.
Two towns anchor the coast. Christiansted, on the north shore, grew up around a reef-protected harbour and keeps its Danish-era street grid, arcaded buildings and yellow fort. Frederiksted, at the western end, faces open water with a long pier and a straight waterfront. A Saint Croix map poster shows both grids at once, joined by the roads that cross the island.
Denmark ruled the island until 1917, when it sold its Caribbean colonies to the United States. Alexander Hamilton spent part of his youth in Christiansted before leaving for New York. Off the northeast coast lies Buck Island Reef National Monument, and Point Udall, on the eastern tip, is often cited as the easternmost point of the United States.

At the western end, a straight seafront and a long cruise pier face the open Caribbean. The town's regular blocks sit on flat ground and look crisp and orderly on the map.
Eastern point
The island narrows into a dry, hilly spine that ends at Point Udall. With water on three sides, this tail gives Saint Croix its tapering outline.
