Saint-Cyr-l'École lies in the Yvelines, directly west of the park of Versailles. On a map, its eastern edge meets the long axis of the royal gardens, and the town extends westward across the plateau, with a small aerodrome forming a large open space among its streets.
The town's name is linked to two famous schools. In 1686 Madame de Maintenon founded a school for young noblewomen here, and in the nineteenth century the buildings housed the military academy established by Napoleon, which remained until the Second World War before moving to Brittany.
