Saint-Laurent-du-Var faces Nice across the mouth of the Var River, the broad stony riverbed that meets the Mediterranean at the western end of the Baie des Anges. On a map, the river forms a wide pale corridor down one side of town, crossed by several bridges, with the runways of Nice Côte d'Azur Airport visible on the far bank.
For centuries the Var marked a border, separating France from the County of Nice until 1860, and the old village of Saint-Laurent grew up as a crossing point.
