Salaberry-de-Valleyfield lies southwest of Montreal, on land shaped by the St. Lawrence River and Lake Saint-François. On the map, water frames the city on several sides. A broad bay opens to the west, the river flows along the south and the long, straight Beauharnois Canal passes to the north. Downtown is compact, set close to the waterfront.
An older canal runs through the centre and gives the downtown a strong central line lined with parks. With so much water in and around the city, Valleyfield has earned the nickname the Venice of Quebec. The bay is known for the Valleyfield Regattas, a long-running hydroplane race that draws large crowds each summer.
