São Vicente occupies the western part of São Vicente Island, which it shares with Santos, together with a large area on the mainland across the channel. Founded in 1532 by Martim Afonso de Sousa, São Vicente was the first Portuguese town established in Brazil. The Ponte Pênsil, a suspension bridge opened in 1914, links the island with the mainland and remains one of the city's best-known structures. Beaches such as Gonzaguinha and Itararé line the shore, and the small Porchat Island sits just off the coast.
