Schio lies at the point where the Leogra valley opens onto the plain north of Vicenza, with the Prealps rising steeply behind it. On a map the old centre forms a compact core of winding streets, while the town spreads outward towards the flat land to the south. Mountain slopes and wooded ridges give the northern side of the map a dense, textured edge.
In the nineteenth century Schio became one of Italy's leading textile centres, largely through the wool mills of Alessandro Rossi. The tall Fabbrica Alta, built in 1862, still stands as a landmark of that period, and the planned workers' district known as the Nuovo Quartiere shows how the industry reshaped the town's plan.

The irregular medieval core, the regular blocks of the industrial quarter and the steep terrain to the north give the composition three distinct characters.
