Segovia lies in the northeast of Antioquia, in hilly, forested country between the Magdalena and Cauca valleys. From above, the town does not follow a strict grid. Streets bend along ridgelines and descend into ravines, and houses cling to slopes, giving the plan an irregular, organic shape shaped by the terrain.
Segovia is known above all for gold mining, which has been the basis of its economy for well over a century. The map reflects this history, with mining sites and access roads on the edges of the town and scattered settlements in the surrounding hills. Streams run through the valleys and shape the lines of the roads.
