Senlis has one of the clearest outlines of any small town in northern France. Seen from above, the historic centre is an almost oval enclosure traced by its old ramparts, with narrow streets packed inside. Around that core are boulevards, later quarters and then the large forests of Halatte and Chantilly, which give the whole area a dark green frame on a map.
In the middle of the oval stands the Cathedral of Notre-Dame, one of the early Gothic cathedrals of France. The streets around it are short, winding and closely built, while traces of the Gallo-Roman wall still show up in the curves of the inner lanes. The small river Nonette runs along the southern side, and its channels break the tight grid into softer lines.
Senlis was a royal town for centuries, and in 987 Hugh Capet was chosen king here, so it is often linked with the start of the Capetian dynasty. A Senlis map poster turns this history into shape: a walled oval, a cathedral square at its heart and a ring of forest on every side.
