Shaoguan sits in the mountainous north of Guangdong, where the Zhen River and the Wu River join to form the Bei River, the North River that flows south towards the Pearl River Delta. The old centre occupies the tongue of land between the two rivers, so from above the heart of the city looks like an arrowhead pointing downstream.
Bridges tie the peninsula to the districts on the opposite banks, and newer neighbourhoods spread along the river valleys wherever the terrain allows. Green hills press in closely, so the built-up area extends in long fingers rather than a single mass. The mix of water, slopes and bridges gives the map a strong shape that reads clearly even at the smallest print sizes.
The region is known for Danxia Mountain, the red sandstone landscape that gave its name to a whole type of landform and is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. South of the city stands Nanhua Temple, associated with Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism.
