St. Petersburg occupies the southern part of the Pinellas Peninsula, with Tampa Bay to the east and Boca Ciega Bay and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. Most of the city follows a clear grid of numbered streets running north to south and avenues running east to west, with Central Avenue dividing north from south. On a St. Petersburg map poster the grid runs down to water on three sides.
Downtown faces Tampa Bay along a continuous strip of waterfront parks, kept public by early city leaders. The St. Pete Pier reaches into the bay from here, and nearby the Dalí Museum sits beside the harbour. Further south, Lake Maggiore and a series of bayous and inlets break the grid into softer, irregular shapes.
The city is known as the Sunshine City, and just beyond its southern tip the Sunshine Skyway Bridge crosses the mouth of Tampa Bay, its long approaches drawing a thin line over open water. To the west, causeways reach the barrier islands along the Gulf beaches, adding delicate lines to the edge of the map.
