Stefansson Island lies in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, in Nunavut, just off the northeastern coast of Victoria Island. On a map it is a large, compact island, separated from its much bigger neighbour by a narrow channel, with Viscount Melville Sound opening to the north. Its outline is solid and fairly regular, a block rather than a web.
The island is uninhabited, with no roads or settlements. Its surface is low Arctic tundra, and the surrounding waters are ice-covered for most of the year. On the map that absence becomes the point. It was named after the explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson, who travelled widely through the Canadian Arctic in the early twentieth century.
