Steyr grew at the confluence of two rivers, the Enns and the Steyr, and the meeting point defines the town from above. The old centre occupies the narrow wedge of land between the two, with the long Stadtplatz running parallel to the Enns and the Schloss Lamberg standing near the point where the waters join.
Bridges link the old town to suburbs on the opposite banks, and the steep river terraces create layered patterns of streets at different levels. Steyr also has a long industrial history, from medieval ironworking to the arms and vehicle works associated with Josef Werndl, which left larger industrial areas along the riverbanks.
