Tabay lies in the state of Mérida in the Venezuelan Andes, northeast of the city of Mérida, in the upper valley of the Chama River. From above, the town stretches along the valley. The main road and the river run side by side, streets branch off wherever the ground allows, and steep slopes rise on both sides.
The geography is dramatic for a town of this size. Mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Mérida rise to the southeast, and the valley narrows as it climbs toward the high páramo. On the map, the town looks like a long, narrow band with side streets reaching into the hills. Relief and river do more to define the shape than any planned grid.
Tabay is a common starting point for trips into the mountains above Mérida and is known for its cool climate and nearby hot springs.
