Thetford Mines lies in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, in rolling hill country south of Quebec City. For over a century the town was one of the world's major centres of asbestos mining, and the landscape still carries the imprint of that industry in its large open pits and pale tailings mounds.
On a map these features dominate. Streets and neighbourhoods curve around the edges of the pits, and roads bend to avoid the steep, altered ground. The result is a town shaped as much by excavation as by planning, a layout unlike almost any other in Canada.
