Tongren lies in north-eastern Guizhou, close to the borders with Hunan and Chongqing, in a region of steep hills, karst and forest. The central city occupies a narrow valley along the Jin River, and its plan is dictated by the curves of the water and the slopes on either side.
From above, the city appears as a long, winding band of streets following the river, with bridges linking the two banks and newer districts spreading into side valleys and onto flatter ground. The hills are left largely unbuilt, forming dark shapes against the dense lines of the valley floor.
The region is home to Tujia, Miao, Dong and other communities, and it is known above all for Fanjingshan, a mountain and nature reserve inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A Tongren map poster focuses on the city itself, a river settlement shaped closely by the hills around it.
