Tønsberg sits at the head of the Oslofjord's western side, where land and water are closely mixed. The town centre is gathered around Slottsfjellet, a steep hill that once held a medieval fortress. To the south, the Kanalen channel cuts between the mainland and the islands of Nøtterøy and Tjøme, and bridges link the pieces together. The coastline twists into bays and inlets on almost every side.
Tønsberg is often called Norway's oldest town, with a history going back to the Viking Age. The famous Oseberg ship, a richly decorated Viking burial ship, was found on a farm nearby and is now one of the best-known archaeological finds in Scandinavia. Today, the harbour front along the canal is lined with restaurants and boats, especially in summer.
