Trenčín lies in western Slovakia in the valley of the Váh, the country's longest river, close to the Czech border. The historic centre is small and tightly packed below a steep limestone rock topped by Trenčín Castle, one of the most visible fortresses in Slovakia. From above, the squares and lanes of the old town form a dense cluster between the castle hill and the river.
The castle rock carries a famous Roman inscription from 179 AD recording a victory by the legion stationed at Laugaricio. It is among the northernmost traces of the Roman army in central Europe. The city has since spread across both banks of the river, linked by several bridges, and in 2026 it holds the title of European Capital of Culture.
