Ullal sits on the Karnataka coast just south of Mangaluru, where the Netravati river reaches the Arabian Sea. From above, the town is framed by water on two sides: the long, straight beach to the west and the wide river mouth to the north. Streets run inland from the shore in a loose, organic pattern shaped by lanes, coconut groves and older settlement lines.
Ullal is widely known for its dargah of Sayyid Muhammad Sharif Madani, a shrine that draws pilgrims from across the region. It is also remembered as the seat of Rani Abbakka Chowta, the sixteenth-century queen of Ullal who resisted Portuguese attempts to control the coast, and who is still celebrated in Karnataka today.

The Arabian Sea coast runs almost straight along the western side of town. On the poster it gives the design a firm, simple edge against the open water.
Organic street pattern
Inland, the lanes follow older paths rather than a planned grid. The irregular texture contrasts nicely with the smooth lines of the coast and river.
