Uslar lies in southern Lower Saxony, on the western edge of the Solling, a large forested upland between the Weser and the Leine. On a map, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets in a valley. Forest covers much of the surrounding land, so the built-up area looks like an island of fine lines in a wide field of open space.
The historic centre is a tight knot of short, irregular lanes, typical of a small German market town that grew over centuries. Many of its buildings are half-timbered, although the map shows only their footprint and the pattern of the streets. Roads leave the centre along the valley floor and connect to villages that now belong to the municipality, each a smaller cluster of its own.
