Uto Map Poster
Uto lies in Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu, just south of Kumamoto city, where the Uto Peninsula begins to reach west into the Ariake Sea. The city occupies flat land near the coast, crossed by railway lines and roads that lead south along Kyushu and west onto the peninsula. The landscape around it is mainly farmland, with hills rising toward the peninsula.
From above, Uto shows the typical pattern of a Japanese regional city: a dense centre around the station, residential areas with narrow, irregular streets, and a wide belt of rice paddies divided into small rectangles. In 2016 the Kumamoto earthquakes badly damaged the city hall, which became one of the images of the disaster before being rebuilt.

To the west, the land narrows into the Uto Peninsula, with hills and coastline. It gives the edge of the poster a shape that is distinct from the flat plain.
Rail and road lines
Railway lines and main roads cross the city from north to south. They connect Uto with Kumamoto and give the composition a strong sense of direction.
