Velbert lies in the Mettmann district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the hills between the Ruhr valley to the north and Wuppertal to the south. The town has three main parts, Velbert itself, Neviges and Langenberg. On the map they appear as separate clusters of streets, linked by roads that follow valleys and ridges through wooded, rolling countryside.
Velbert is known in Germany as a centre of lock and key manufacturing, a trade that shaped its economy for generations and is documented in the German Lock and Fittings Museum. Neviges is a well-known pilgrimage town, famous for its modern concrete pilgrimage church designed by the architect Gottfried Böhm, while Langenberg keeps many historic slate-clad and half-timbered houses.
