Weesp lies east of Amsterdam, where the river Vecht winds north through flat polder land crossed by water. The historic centre is compact and held together by the river and narrow canals. Its short streets and bridges give the map a fine, dense grain. Since 2022 the town has been part of the municipality of Amsterdam, but on the map it still reads as a place of its own.
The old fortifications left a clear mark. Weesp was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the ring of defences around the capital. The outlines of bastions and moats still curve around parts of the town. These angular shapes of water are among the most distinctive details a black-and-white rendering can show.
Beyond the centre, newer neighbourhoods, railway lines and the broad Amsterdam-Rhine Canal to the west frame the old town. A Weesp map poster shows these layers: the water first, then the fortifications, then the modern town fitted around both. The town is also remembered as the place where Van Houten made cocoa for many years.
