Weil am Rhein sits in the far south-west of Germany, on the right bank of the Rhine, directly next to Basel. Borders define its map: the river forms the line with France to the west, and the Swiss city presses in from the south. Rail yards, motorways and residential districts fill the flat land by the river, while vineyard slopes rise to the east.
The town is known internationally for the Vitra Campus, a group of design and architecture buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando and others. On the map the campus appears as a distinct cluster of large, unusual footprints. A Basel tram line now runs across the border into Weil, and on the map rails and roads tie the town closely to its neighbours.
