Werder (Havel) lies just west of Potsdam in Brandenburg, where the Havel widens into a chain of lakes. Its historic core occupies a small island in the river, reached by a short bridge. On a map that island stands out at once: a tight oval of old streets and houses with water all around it.
The town has long been known for fruit growing, with orchards covering the slopes around it. Each spring the Baumblütenfest, a blossom festival built around the local fruit wines, draws large crowds from Berlin and Potsdam. The island's windmill and church are among its best-known sights.
