Werl lies in the Soest district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the Hellweg, the old east–west trade route that ran along the southern edge of the Westphalian lowland. The town grew prosperous on salt, drawn from brine springs that were worked here for centuries, and like other Hellweg towns it developed a compact historic core of markets, churches and closely packed streets.
Werl is best known today as a Marian pilgrimage destination. Its pilgrimage basilica houses a venerated image of the Virgin Mary that has drawn visitors since the seventeenth century, and the town still welcomes large numbers of pilgrims each year. On a map the old town appears as a dense cluster, with later residential districts spreading outward in looser, more regular patterns.
Around the edges, flat and fertile farmland and the motorway links toward the Ruhr and the Sauerland give the composition a wider frame.
