Wolfenbüttel lies on the Oker river in Lower Saxony, just south of Braunschweig. For about three centuries it was the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, and the map still shows it. The Schloss sits within water, arms of the Oker and old moat channels thread through the centre, and a regular grid marks the Heinrichstadt, which is considered one of the earliest planned towns in Germany.
The town's best-known institution is the Herzog August Library, a renowned collection of early modern books and manuscripts where Gotthold Ephraim Lessing worked as librarian. The old town has one of the largest ensembles of half-timbered houses in Germany. Wolfenbüttel is also the home of the Jägermeister company, which was founded here.
