Xánthi sits in northeastern Greece where the plain of Thrace meets the first ridges of the Rhodope mountains. The map shows two distinct characters: a newer town spread across flat ground in a fairly regular pattern of blocks, and an old town rising up the hillside to the north, where narrow lanes twist and branch as they follow the slope.
The Kosynthos river runs down from the mountains along the eastern side of the old quarter, a clear line on the map as it leaves its gorge and enters the plain. Around the centre, the main square and market streets form the busiest knot of the plan, from which roads lead out across the farmland toward Kavala, Komotini and the coast.
Xánthi prospered in the nineteenth century through the tobacco trade, and the merchants' mansions and warehouses of that era still define the old town. Today it is also a university town, home to engineering schools of the Democritus University of Thrace, and known for its carnival.
