Zeitz lies in the south of Saxony-Anhalt, where the White Elster river cuts through rolling country near the borders with Saxony and Thuringia. The town has a clear upper and lower part. On the map, the old centre sits on higher ground above the river, with its streets closing around market squares, while newer districts spread across the valley floor and surrounding slopes.
For centuries Zeitz was an important ecclesiastical and princely seat. Schloss Moritzburg, a baroque palace, stands beside the cathedral of St. Peter and Paul at the northern edge of the old town. Beneath the streets lies a large network of medieval cellars and passages that can be visited today, a hidden layer that no surface map shows.
