Cuautepec de Hinojosa lies in the highlands of eastern Hidalgo, close to the city of Tulancingo. The town sits at altitude, with hills and higher ground around it, and its map reflects that setting. The centre follows the familiar Mexican pattern of a main square and church surrounded by a grid of blocks, while outer streets bend more freely to follow the lie of the land.
Roads link Cuautepec with Tulancingo and with rural communities across the municipality.
