Derince lies on the northern shore of the Gulf of İzmit, just west of İzmit, in Kocaeli province. From above, the town is a narrow strip between the water and the hills. Port piers and industrial sites line the shore. Behind them, the main road and railway run parallel to the coast, and residential streets climb up the slopes in steep, stepped rows.
The Port of Derince is one of the most important on the gulf and has long served the industrial area of Kocaeli, one of Turkey's biggest manufacturing regions. The town grew around this port and the railway to İzmit and Istanbul. The gulf itself is long and narrow, so the opposite shore is always visible across the water.
