Great Malvern climbs the eastern face of the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire, a narrow ridge that rises abruptly from the Severn plain. The town became famous in the nineteenth century for its water cure, when visitors came to drink and bathe in the pure spring water that still flows from the hills. Malvern water is still bottled and sold today.
The slope defines the map. Roads run across the hill, following the contour lines in long, gentle curves, while short, steep links connect them. Villas and hotels built for spa visitors sit on terraces with views over the plain. Above the town, the lines stop and the open ridge of the hills continues to Worcestershire Beacon.
